The picture seen above is of the Clark & Company Motor Engineering Limited premises in the 1920’s which was situated on Oswald Road. The building still stands today – next to The Honest Lawyer pub – and is currently used as the AM/PM Express Convenience Store.
In the lettering on the windows on the front of the building the company advertises itself as selling Standard And Vulcan vehicles which would have been the preserve of the more affluent of the townsfolk.
The pictures showing the interior of the workshops and showroom (below) show Humber cars lined up for customers viewing. Humber had factories in the Midlands and from 1913 were the second largest car-making companies in the country.
The company also built and designed buses, an example of which can be seen below.
